We're getting ready for MLB.com to release their own version of the top 100 MLB prospects list. It's important for the farm to improve as much as possible for the Miami Marlins. The Hall of Fame inductions have already passed and that was quite interesting to look at as well. In the meantime, another free agent signing took place, this one involving former Fish fan favorite Jon Berti.
Former Miami Marlins fan favorite has a new team.
Jon Berti was a fan favorite when he played for the Miami Marlins. He played for the team from 2019 to 2023. That was a nice run with the team, that ended with him being part of the playoff team in that memorable 2023 season. He was mostly a bench player, and did have quite a history of injuries that sadly tainted his career.
Berti was a speedster, who stole an amazing 41 bases in the 2022 season. That season, he batted .240/.324/.338, with 4 home runs and 28 RBI in 102 games and 358 AB. He was worth 2.4 WAR for that season. In fact, he never had a WAR higher than 2.4, that he had in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Overall for his career with the Miami Marlins, Jon Berti batted .258/.338/.367 in 432 games and 1355 AB. He was worth 7.7 WAR for the year. It was obviously not the most productive run if we're being honest, but he was still a speedster who tried his best on the field. He was also very versatile, and played many different positions throughout his career. He was able to play third base, the outfield and technically second base and first base.
Peter Bendix apparently wasn't interested in signing Jon Berti, as there were no rumors to the contrary. Ultimately, it was the Chicago Cubs that signed him for 1 year/$2 million with a $1.3 million performance bonus. Berti is already 35 years old, so I can see the argument that he's "too old" for the rebuilding Miami Marlins. I do wish Berti a lot of success, and hope that he does well for Chicago.
