The Miami Marlins don't have much to look forward to as free agency is coming to an end. There is however the Hall of Fame inductions to look forward too. There are some former Marlins players who will likely get in. There are also some mock trades that are being talked about as we wait for Spring Training to start next month.
Free agency notes affecting the Miami Marlins.
Let's start with a free agent signing. The Miami Marlins division rivals the New York Mets, re-signed OF Jesse Winker for 1 year and $7.5 million. It's a solid signing as he batted .253/.360/.405, with 14 home runs and 58 RBI in 145 games and 430 AB between the Mets and the Washington Nationals in the 2024 season.
Jesse Winker isn't a star, but he's a solid veteran bat to have coming off of the bench for the Mets. I would therefore consider it a good move for them. I don't see it as an issue that the Miami Marlins didn't sign him, as The Fish need more lon-term pieces and he certainly wouldn't be one of them.
Turning over to other free agent news. There's still the question of free agent third baseman Alex Bregman. He is a nice veteran leader that in another situation would be great for The Fish. Of course, it's not going to actually happen and he will end up signing elsewhere.
Should the Miami Marlins try to sign him? Bregman is already 30 years old and of course his price tag is clearly not small. He's also not looking for a short-term deal, which is another reason why The Fish are not going to go anywhere near him. It's still is interesting to think about what would've happened, had Peter Bendix been more open to making a veteran leadership type of signing such as this.
Signing Jesse Winker was a good move for the New York Mets, and not signing Alex Bregman is aquestionable one for the Miami Marlins for sure. Time will tell how the future unfolds for these players in the long run.
