Interesting reliever available for the Miami Marlins

It's time for the Miami Marlins to start looking at good options to sign in free agency. Interestingly, there's former players already available. It's time to move forward however and that means pursuing new and better players. We know that Peter Bendix won't be spending for the top names, but what about some bounce back relief pitchers? How about former Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano?

The Miami Marlins should target Jordan Romano in free agency.

It's not particularly obvious to most, but the Miami Marlins actually have a pretty solid bullpen for the 2025 season. It's always nice to add more arms however, as pitching and especially relievers are very volatile. There's currently a formerly elite closer available for likely a low price.

Jordan Romano was doing a very good job closing for Toronto from 2021 to 2023. He pitched to a 2.37 ERA/3.13 FIP, with 11.1 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9. He did that in 184 games and 186.0 innings pitched. He accumulated 95 saves throughout that time. He was one of the top closers in the Majors and it would've been very hard for The Fish to pry him away. He's now available in free agency after being non-tendered.

It makes sense why Romano was non-tendered. He spent most of the 2024 season on the injured list, and pitched to a poor 6.59 ERA/6.17 FIP, with 8.6 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in just 15 games and 13.2 innings pitched. He did however accumulate 8 saves. It seems that Toronto didn't want to pay him close to $10 million for the 2025 season, with questions over his health.

The Miami Marlins could look into how much Romano wants, and whether or not his health is a real concern going forward. He could likely be signed for significantly less than those $10 million, and he'd have an easier path to closing with The Fish. That might be very appealing to him, and might be enough to get him to sign with the team. I definitely want Peter Bendix to take a look at what it would take to bring him in.
