Most of us don't want a trade to happen. The Miami Marlins trading ace Sandy Alcantara at the Trade Deadline that is. It seemed obvious even before the season started, that Peter Bendix would ultimately trade Sandy somewhere by the aforementioned deadline. Since then, The Fish have been doing much better than expected and you have to wonder if maybe the team could actually hold on to the ace.
The Miami Marlins may not trade Sandy Alcantara?
It pains me to say this, but I still can't predict the Miami Marlins making the playoffs this season. Can it happen? Yes. Will it happen? Probably not. It's hard to see The Fish winning the division over the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Wild Card mix includes the San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers....
If the Marlins are actually in the Wild Card mix, then that would be one reason for the team not to trade Sandy. Hard to see Bendix moving the ace in the middle of a playoff hunt. I would love for The Fish to be in that hunt and honestly I'm not ruling it out. That said, the reason that I had in mind is simply production.
Coming back from Tommy John Surgery isn't easy, it takes not just actual recovery, but also getting your stuff to be the way it was. It takes time, and it seems that it's certainly happening for Sandy right now. He needs some time to fully get back to what he once was. He's currently sitting on a 4.14 ERA/4.03 FIP, with 7.0 K/9 and 4.7 BB/9 in 3 games and 15.1 innings pitched.
The control has clearly been an issue for Sandy, which will likely be fixed as the season goes on. His career rate is of course 2.8. That said, my guess is that if he's still sitting on a similar ERA, it's possible that teams won't offer too much for him. I don't see Bendix selling low, so it makes me believe that Sandy Alcantara might actually stay on the Miami Marlins through this season.
