One of the best stories of the end of last season, was Nick Fortes breaking out as a capable catcher for The Fish after all. This was a positive, considering how lackluster he's technically been throughout the majority of his career on the team. There is of course an interesting power hitting catching prospect on the way as well. I'm talking about Agustin Ramirez of course. The entire Miami Marlins catching corps also includes new backup catcher Liam Hicks and top prospect Joe Mack.

How does the Miami Marlins catching situation look going forward?

Trusting the starting spot at catcher to Nick Fortes could be seen as a dangerous move, considering he hasn't exactly lit the world on fire in 2024. He did improve in the second half as I previously mentioned, but his overall batting line was still .227/.259/.318, with 4 home runs and 29 RBI in 110 games and 308 AB. He was worth just 0.0 WAR for that performance.

Liam Hicks is a 25 year old who hasn't played in the Major Leagues up to this point. He hasn't even played at the AAA level and is surprisingly expected to be the backup catcher for Fortes. He has a career .275/.405/.374 batting line in the Minor Leagues. Hopefully he can be at least decent if he's indeed the backup catcher.

I'm of course most excited about the two prospects. Agustin Ramirez is probably not meant to be a catche rlong-term, and would fit much better at first base for the team. That is very likely where he will end up in the future. Depending on the other players in the first base of course.

Joe Mack is very intriguing too. I'm fully expecting him to ultimately end up as the team's starting catcher down the line. This is definitely turning into a make or break year for Nick Fortes. Agustin Ramirez is almost certainly a future first baseman/designated hitter and Liam Hicks is likely on the Miami Marlins temporarily. I really don't see this as a bad situation and hope that things continue improving going forward.
