Marlins could target a bounce back candidate
The Miami Marlins have a new manager and he just won the World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Fish have a lot of talented starting pitchers with high upside ready to go next season. Could there be room for more additions however? Additions that could help the team some more? Or potentially be trade pieces at the Trade Deadline?
Should the Miami Marlins target Walker Buehler this off-season?
The Miami Marlins have have some aces coming back this season. Sandy Alcantara, the 2022 NL Cy Young award winner is coming back for one. He's expected to take the mound on Opening Day in fact. Fellow injured ace Eury Perez will be coming back as well, though like Sandy he will almost certainly be on an innings limit.
Yet another injured starting pitcher coming back is of course Jesus Luzardo. He's potentially a candidate to be traded at the Trade Deadline, though if the team is in playoff contention he will of course remain on the team. Ryan Weathers will have a chance to follow up on his 2024 break-out season, so there will definitely be a spot in the rotation for him.
We're not done yet! Braxton Garrett is on his way back as well, and there's also Edward Cabrera in the mix as well. It might seem like there's no room for any more additions, but with many of these pitchers on inning limits, I see room for another pitcher after all. What about Walker Buehler?
Walker Buehler happens to have history with new Miami Marlins manager Clayton McCullough, who he just won the World Series with. He has to be on a bit of an innings limit himself, but he can rebuild his value after a tough 2024 season. He can sign a one-year deal and then if anything be flipped to improve the farm at the Trade Deadline.
Buehler struggled in 2024, pitching to a 5.38 ERA/5.54 FIP, with 7.6 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 16 games and 75.1 innings pitched. He was worth -1.3 WAR, but did better in the playoffs, including getting the final out in the World Series coming in in relief.
