The Miami Marlins are adding players in time for Spring Training to begin, while also building up the farm. The Fish made another move which is unlikely to make a difference, but should still help the team. It was a very underwhelming off-season, but let's hope that some of these mves actually pay off in the long run. Let's take a look at this one.
More roster moves for the Miami Marlins this week.
Right-handed pitcher Ronny Henriquez is coming over to the Miami Marlins, after being claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins. Henriquez is actually a very interesting arm. He debuted in the 2022 season, pitching to a 2.31 ERA/3.97 FIP, with 6.9 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 3 games (no starts) and 11.2 innings pitched. He was worth 0.2 WAR for that performance. After missing the 2023 season due to injury, he was back in the 2024 season.
What did Henriquez do in 2024? He pitched to a 3.26 ERA/4.05 FIP, with 7.0 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 16 games (1 start) and 19.1 innings pitched. He was worth 0.3 WAR for that performance. As you can see, he has a habit of having good ERA's. The FIP's are underwhelming and he isn't an elite strikeout artist, but I do see the potential there.
RHP Xzavion Curry had a brief run with the Miami Marlins in the second half of the 2024 season. He pitched to a 3.00 ERA/4.22 FIP with 6.5 K/9 and 1.0 BB/9, in 9 games (1 start) and 18.0 innings pitched. He was worth 0.5 WAR for that performance. I actually like the strikeout/walk rate difference, but I could see why the FIP scared management away. Curry has been designated for assignment and will likely be claimed by another team before Spring Training officially begins.
The Miami Marlins won't miss Xzavion Curry and I'm interested in seeing what Xzavion Curry will do in his place. I'm all for The Fish adding depth and hopefully this turns out to work out well for the team. In the meantime, we're left hoping that the team will make at least one move of note before Spring Training officially begins.
