The Miami Marlins are yet to spend any money on free agents this off-season. We here still have hope for the 2025 season, but it may be too little too late. Apparently, one major free agent may finally sign a contract this off-season. I'm of course talking about first baseman Pete Alonso. It looks like he might e on his way to the Toronto Blue Jays.
It looks like Miami Marlins rival Pete Alonso may sign with Toronto.
The Toronto Blue Jays are closer to a rebuild than they are to contending. They still look like they will probably have a better season in 2025 than the Miami Marlins. Their franchise player is first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who is hitting free agency after next season. I don't see him signing an extension with the team, which is why Toronto may be looking to line up a replacement early.
Pete Alonso could DH for the 2025 season, and then replace Vlad at first base in the 2026 season. That sound slike the plan that we're seeing here from Toronto. Is it the right call? Sure. Alonso would improve their lineup significantly, though if I was them, I'd probably just trade Vlad if I can't re-sign him this off-season. I don't see Toronto making the playoffs in 2025 with or without Alonso.
The San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Angels are other teams in the mix for Alonso according to reports. The New York Mets are surprisingly passing on re-signing him, which is of course a pretty ridiculous turn of events. Both the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves look like better teams than the Mets at this point. The Mets badly need another bat, and re-signing Alonso was easily the right call for them.
Pete Alonso is the top free agent left on the market, and it looks like he will be on a new team this upcoming season. That team won't be the Miami Marlins of course, but it also is increasingly unlikely to be the New York Mets at this point in time.
