Crazy idea for the Miami Marlins that sadly won't happen

The Miami Marlins need to have a payroll at the $105 million mark, in order to receive revenue sharing money. Right now that payroll number sits at $82.8 million. That adds up to a $22.2 difference, but we'll get there. It certainly looks like the Miami Marlins divisional rivals, the New York Mets will be losing star first baseman Pete Alonso to free agency this off-season. It's truly a bizarre decision for them.

Miami Marlins should sign Pete Alonso this off-season.

It's not going to happen. Miami Marlins principal owner Bruce Sherman is not going to spend on any top free agents this off-season. That said, can you imagine how good of a situation it would be if Peter Bendix ended up stealing Pete Alonso from the New York Mets!

The Mets passing on re-signing Alonso is pretty bizarre to me. It's also bizarre to me that Major League Baseball does nothing to help a team from Miami, spend like a team from Miami should. But the latter is not the subject today. What it does make me think about, is a move that The Fish could actually make, though as mentioned earlier almost certainly will not.

Pete Alonso is still on the free agent market, waiting for a deal that has yet to materialize. I already covered that the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels and the Toronto Blue Jays seem to be the top teams after him. The New York Mets apparently don't believe that they can re-sign him at this point, mostly because they won't pay him what in all honesty he deserves.

This puts the Miami Marlins in an interesting position. Why not offer him a one-year deal with a high salary? It would be a one-year deal and he can always be flipped at the Trade Deadline. For Alonso, it would be a chance to rebuild his value before inevitably hitting free agency again next off-season. He could then attempt to have a better platform season, in order to receive the contract that he wanted prior to this off-season. It won't happen, but the Miami Marlins should look into it.
