It may be tiring to keep hearing about this, but this is indeed an issue that affects the Miami Marlins. The New York Mets are major divisional rivals for The Fish, and them losing their top power bat would definitely affect things going forward. I'm of course talking about first baseman Pete Alonso. We now have even more news on the subject.

Miami Marlins rival bat Pete Alonso is likely leaving the New York Mets.

Back in the Summer of the 2023 season, the New York Mets offered Pete Alonso an extension for 7 years and $158 million. It would not have been good for the Miami Marlins, if Alonso would've taken that extension. I'm not surprised that Alonso decided to take his time and test out the free agent market.

Alonso is now finding himself in a weird situation. Spring Training begins next month, and he still does not have a team. He reportedly offered the Mets a special deal of three years, at around $31 million a season with opt-outs. This seems like a pretty fair deal to me, but for whatever reason the Mets don't agree. As a result, it seems that Alonso's days with the Mets are indeed coming to an end.

The Mets now believe that Pete Alonso will sign elsewhere. It sounds like the Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels and the Toronto Blue Jays are more likely to sign him at this point. I'm actually surprised that the Mets are passing on him, the deal is fair and they could really use his power bat in the lineup.

Assuming Alonso signs elsewhere, I'd call this New York Mets off-season as very underwhelming. They really let their rotation go and didn't do anything to improve their bullpen. It's not the way things looked like after a certain big signing by them. The Miami Marlins will surely benefit not having to deal with Alonso's bat when playing the Mets. It's of course possible that they will still end up re-signing Alonso, but for now it's not looking likely.
