The Miami Marlins are not going to be signing Pete Alonso in free agency this off-season. That should be obvious of course. With all of the money that Steve Cohen has already spent on other sluggers, you'd think that he'd keep the incumbent first baseman. However, with the way they don't spend on pitching, it's not a surprise.
Where will Miami Marlins rival hitter end up this off-season?
It certainly looks like as if the New York Mets are not in a rush to re-sign Pete Alonso. The hold-up appears to be the years, as Alonso and his agent Scott Boras want to get the most years possible for the power slugger. Pete Alonso is of course a tricky hitter to really honestly evaluate, as he's not a good defender and has low batting averages.
The market for him also seems to have significantly dwindled as the off-season went on. The New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, Washington Nationals, Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Guardians already have first basemen for the 2025 season.
The Miami Marlins, Athletics, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners and the Baltimore Orioles don't seem likely to play at that financial level.
This leaves us with the desperate Toronto Blue Jays, who might be willing to bring him in as the DH. There's the incumbent New York Mets. There's also the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Angels in the potential mix. It's hard to say which of these teams will sign him, but if I had to make a prediction, the Angels could be the team that overspends in the mix. They seem to genuinely believe that they can contend in the 2025 season, which means that they could sign him.
It will be interesting to see where Pete Alonso ends up when all is said and done. My guess is that he will end up with one of the California teams.
