I still can't really comprehend the mindset behind what the New York Mets have been doing with their pitching. It's just one bad move after another, and I seriously don't get it. They now watched as much-needed ace Corbin Burnes signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. I don't get it and don't see them as a playoff team in the 2025 season. Why couldn't they sign him?

Miami Marlins rivals don't seem to care about their starting pitching.

What's going on with the New York Mets? They made a surprise and to be honest flukey run to the National League Championship Series in 2024. You'd think that they would make an effort to get better for the 2025 season. They certainly attempted to do so on the hitting side at a grand scale. Which is why it is so odd to me, that they didn't do the same on the pitching side.

Kodai Senga is back as the ace of the staff, after missing most of the 2024 season. They brought back Sean Manaea, who overachieved in 2024. He pitched to a 3.47 ERA/3.83 FIP, with 9.1 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9, in 32 games and 181.2 innings pitched. His career ERA is 4.00 and his career FIP is 4.01. He almost certainly will be closer to that in the 2025 season. David Peterson had his own career year, pitching to a 2.90 ERA/3.67 FIP, with 7.5 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 21 games and 121.0 innings pitched in 2024. His career ERA is 4.08, as is his career FIP.

They subtracted two starting pitchers from the mix. Gone is Luis Severino, who pitched to a 3.91 ERA/4.21 FIP, with 8.0 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 31 games and 182.0 innings pitched. They also lost Jose Quintana, who pitched to a 3.75 ERA/4.56 FIP, with 7.1 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 31 games and 170.1 innings pitched. Their replacements are Clay Holmes, who isn't even a starting pitcher and was terrible in that role in 2018, and Frankie Montas. Montas had a 4.84 ERA/4.71 FIP, with 8.8 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 in 30 games and 150.2 innings pitched in 2025.

Any way that you look at it, the Mets got worse this off-season on the pitching side. This isn't bad for the Miami Marlins.
