Could the Miami Marlins ace not be traded at the Trade Deadline? A major extension is certainly shaking up the off-season free agent market. While Vladimir Guerrero Jr. does not play in the division, I was sure before his extension that he'd end up signing with one of the New York teams. While the New York Mets do have Pete Alonso entrenched at first base, they could've always either let him go or move him to DH.

Pete Alonso may be leaving the Miami Marlins' division rivals.

Pete Alonso wasn't very good last season to say the least. He batted .240/.329/.459, with 34 home runs and 88 RBI in 162 games and 608 AB. He was worth 2.6 WAR. It was actually worse than his production in 2023. That season, he batted .217/.318/.504, with 46 home runs and 118 RBI in 154 games and 568 AB. He was worth 3.3 WAR for that season.

Alonso took a long time to re-sign with the Mets during the last off-season, making it pretty clear that the Mets had a price for him and were not going to budge. It took until the end before he finally re-signed with the team. He has an opt-out in the deal, and is fully expected to opt-out if he does better this season.

So far this season, Pete Alonso is batting an very impressive .345/.464/.673, with 4 home runs and 19 RBI in 16 games and 55 AB. He is currently worth 1.1 WAR. He even has a career-high 95.9 Exit Velocity. He does have a .349 BABIP, which is far higher than his career .267 mark. Even when that goes down, he might still have better numbers than the last two years.

Based on how free agency has went for Alonso last off-season, it's clear that the Mets are strict on what they're willing to pay him. This means that he is very likely to be playing his way out of town. Ironically enough, the New York Yankees could be interested. The San Francisco Giants and Detroit Tigers immediately come to mind as other potential suitors as well.
