Marlins rivals are shockingly sabotaging their own off-season

The New York Mets entered this off-season with three vacancies in their rotation. With Steve Cohen's big pockets and Davis Stearns known as a competent executive, it seemed that these Miami Marlins division rivals would be going after the top arms. Instead, they are not. They're signing injury-prone bottom of the rotation pitchers such as Walker Buehler and Frankie Montas. Why aren't they pursuing Corbin Burnes?

Miami Marlins rivals are being cheap at the wrong time.

As the Miami Marlins watched the playoffs from home, the New York Mets were in the National League Championship Series playing the Los Angeles Dodgers instead. After that appearance, you'd think that they would go all-in this off-season and add much needed starting pitching help. The top available starting pitcher is Corbin Burnes and I was sure that the Mets would be all over him.

It's important to note that the Mets could still sign him, but they haven't been connected to him at all in rumors so far. They signed Frankie Montas and are apparently after Walker Buehler. These types of starting pitchers are odd for a seemingly big market contending team to pursue. They're injury-prone pitchers who were not particularly good in 2024. Neither one had an ERA below 4.00.

Neither of the two can even be counted on for a lot of innings in the 2025 season, so what exactly are the Mets thinking here? If they don't sign any actual top of the rotation starters, they will have a pretty weak rotation next season. They will have a weak shaky one to be more exact. Considering how they just barely made the playoffs this season, this would imply that they'll be depending on a lot of luck to go their way again. That's not very likely if we're being realistic.

Obviously I love seeing this as a Miami Marlins fan. One big worry about the Mets is that Steve Cohen can seemingly outbid everyone. If he actually doe snot however, that's great news for The Fish. We'll see how things go, but the Mets are having a disappointing off-season so far.
