We're all waiting to see what the Miami Marlins will do to contend again in the future, as the team is signing inning-eaters for what already looks to be a lost season. At this point, the best thing that can happen for the team is improvements from the players under long-term team control. One of those players is former top prospect starting pitcher Max Meyer.
Max Meyer is planning for a big season with the Miami Marlins.
Max Meyer debuted in 2022 with the Miami Marlins. I was actually there for that game and sadly it didn't end well. He finished the season with a 7.50 ERA/6.45 FIP, with 9.0 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 2 games and 6.0 innings pitched. He didn't follow that up very well after missing the 2023 season. He returned in the 2024 season with a 5.68 ERA/5.90 FIP, with 7.3 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 11 games and 57.0 innings pitched.
He definitely has a lot to prove in the upcoming 2025 season. With all of the changes to The Fish's rotation, he will finally get a chance to reclaim his previous status as a potential future ace. It wasn't that long ago when he was talked about as exactly that for the Miami Marlins.
Meyer said this about what he's currently doing in Spring Training:
"I'm just going out there and just throwing the nastiest stuff possible and getting after [it] every single time. “I'm excited for all these guys, too. I love watching these guys. I love watching (Ryan) Weathers. … It's so fun to watch him succeed, and with the big offseason that he had. It's been just fun to watch all these guys. And I just can't wait to try to roll out dog after dog.”
Max Meyer used to just throw a four-seam fastball and a slider, but now he's adding a sinker and sweeper to his pitching repertoire. He said this:
"My slider is going to be more down in depth and my sweeper's going to come across the plate. I feel like with the movement, there's definitely a big separation between those two. They're not just looking for that hard (stuff) down when they’ve got to prepare for something else and then worry about a hard fastball, too. So I'm just excited."
