It's been clear that the Miami Marlins needed depth in the rotation and that signing a starting pitcher was a necessity. That pitcher turned out to be Cal Quantrill on a one-year $3.5 million deal. This is the rotation stabilizing move that The Fish needed, and he will now step into the rotation mix just in time for Spring Training. Let's look more into it.

The Miami Marlins added a stabilizing arm for the rotation.

Cal Quantrill will be a mid to bottom of the rotation arm for the Miami Marlins. Peter Bendix signed him for 1 year/$3.5 million, which is of course very cheap, so it's clearly not The Fish flexing any financial muscles, but it's still a signing of a needed player to a Major League deal.

So what does Cal Quantrill bring to the table? He debuted in the 2019 season with the San Diego Padres. He pitched to a 5.16 ERA/4.28 FIP, with 7.8 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 23 games (18 starts) and 18 starts. He split the 2020 season between San Diego and the Cleveland Guardians, pitching to a 2.25 ERA/3.91 FIP, with 8.7 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 18 games (3 starts) and 32.0 innings pitched.

The 2021 season was a sort of breakout season for Quantrill, as he pitched to a 2.89 ERA/4.07 FIP, with 7.3 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 40 games (22 starts) and 149.2 innings pitched. He was still productive in 2022, when he followed that up with a 3.38 ERA/4.12 FIP, with 6.2 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 32 games and 186.1 innings pitched.

Unfortunately, things weren't as good for Cal Quantrill from 2023 to 2024 with both Cleveland and the Colorado Rockies. He pitched to a 5.08 ERA/5.10 FIP, with 6.1 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 in 48 games and 248.0 innings pitched. It's obviously a disappointing time, but he may be able to get back to his old much better form from 2021 and 2022. The righty is still just 30 years old.

Cal Quantrill will be needed to eat innings for the Miami Marlins this upcoming season, and he's the kind of upside arm that can prove to be a good signing.
