MLB Trade Rumors has reported that "several teams" are showing interest in veteran third baseman Yoan Moncada during his free agency. While the Cubs, Blue Jays, and Mariners are specifically cited as potential suitors, Peter Bendix and the Miami Marlins may be wise to consider taking a gamble on the former White Sox star.
Moncada has experienced an odd career arc in his nine seasons in the Show. Early promise seemed to manifest when the veteran broke out during his 25 homer, 79 RBI, and ten-steal season (while hitting a blistering .315) in 2019. The then-24-year-old finished 21st in MVP voting and appeared destined as a pillar of Chicago's roster.
However, the now 29-year-old has never been able to recapture his former promise. Over the next four seasons, Moncada would hit between .212 and .263 with minimal power and almost no speed. He experienced one more surge in 2021 when he posted a sneaky 4.0 WAR season. Unfortunately, each year in between saw him produce under a 1.0 WAR.
Why would the Miami Marlins invest in a fringe talent like Moncada?
While he seems far removed from his All-Star potential, a change in scenery may be good for Moncada. He has spent his entire MLB tenure in Chicago. Perhaps a move to a more familiar city like Miami would help breathe new life into the Cuban-native's career.
Moncada would also be a veteran presence for an extremely young Miami core of hitters. He has not been a model of consistency. But, Moncada has established himself as a near decade-long professional. He could be a much-needed mentor for the next generation of Marlins batters.
Lastly, Moncada's price tag is near an all-time low. His market value is currently projected at just $1.5 million per season. He is a quintessential low-risk, high-reward option for the rebuilding Miami Marlins.
