The Miami Marlins are very busy searching for a new manager. In fact, it seems that The Fish have quite a few candidates for the job. We now know that there is in fact a leading candidate for the position. Craig Albernaz, the bench coach for the Cleveland Guardians is apparently that candidate for the team's position. Why is he the top candidate?
There is a leading candidate for the Miami Marlins managerial position.
This off-season's biggest priority for the Miami Marlins is to get a new manager. There are quite a few candidates, but it's not particularly clear which particular candidate is in the lead. We finally have some more clarity as to who could in fact be the leading candidate. Craig Albernaz is one of the leading candidates, if not THE leading candidate.
Albernaz actually does have experience in managing. He did this in the Minor Leagues. He not only managed there, but he was also the Minor League field coordinator. He actually played for the Tampa Bay Rays in the Minor Leagues from 2006 to 2013. He played as a catcher, which is actually a great position for someone who can later a manage a team. It's a game calling position and a great preparation for an arguably more serious managing position.
He did a lot for Tampa from 2015 to 2019. During that time, he not only managed in the Tampa Minor League system. He was also a coach and a minor league field coordinator. Interestingly, he worked under Gabe Kapler at one point, during a stint with the San Francisco Giants shortly after. That was his first coaching gig and Kapler of course now works for the Marlins.
Craig Albernaz was actually a candidate for the Cleveland Guardians managerial job, before he ended up becoming their bench coach instead. It appears that the managerial search is in the early stages of the process for the Miami Marlins, but it certainly looks like that it's a serious process, that the team is truly working very seriously on. I hope that the new manager will be a good one and will make the right difference.
