It's common knowledge that the Miami Marlins will be getting a new manager in 2025. Replacement names are already popping up and now we have one more candidate on that list. The one big hope that I have is that whoever it is will do a good job and make the team competitive. I don't know how long Peter Bendix plans to retool the roster, but it shouldn't take years.
New managerial candidate for the Miami Marlins.
George Lombard is the one that I'm talking about and he's actually a candidate with the Chicago White Sox for their vacancy as well. Lombard is 49 years old and is currently working as a bench coach for the Detroit Tigers. No one expected Detroit to make a playoff run this season, so naturally their coaches are starting to get some demand around the Major Leagues.
Interestingly, Lombard actually played in the Miami Marlins farm system back in 2008, though sadly he never got to be quite good enough to make it up to the Major Leagues with the team. He actually played in general from 1994-2009 and even played for the other Florida team: the Tampa Bay Rays.
It is important to note that he only managed in the Gulf Coast League back in 2011-2012. That's two seasons of work by the way. He did that with a Minor League team for the Boston Red Sox. Naturally, that's very little experience and may be seen as a concern going forward. That lack of experience at the Major League level could affect things.
George Lombard was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in 2020 and therefore technically won the World Series with the team. He was actually hired by Detroit shortly after this. Even more interestingly, Detroit originally interviewed him for their own managerial vacancy that they had at the time.
I'm curious to see who the Miami Marlins end up with as the team's next manager. Let's hope that it leads to better results on the field as well. I don't want to see a long retooling process. We deserve a contending team.
