Marlins managerial change should not lead to unfounded rumors
Now former Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker really opened up a lot of eyes, when he won the 2022 National League Manager of the Year award. Skip did a good job with the team in 2023, and that lead to a playoff appearance thanks to the advantageous system. Skip is not coming back to the team next season, but there's fans who blame the team.
We don't know why Skip Schumaker left the Miami Marlins.
We have very limited information as to what led to Skip Schumaker's decision to leave the Miami Marlins. We know that he wanted to get out of his contract after the season. We also know that he was upset with the way that Kim Ng left the team. It's definitely admirable that he stayed loyal to Kim Ng, but honestly letting her go was the right call.
Kim Ng destroyed the farm system and made bad signings and trades. It's commendable that Skip stayed so loyal to Ng. She did hire him and that was his first managerial opportunity. I'm glad that he didn't treat that as no big deal and stayed loyal. That said, Kim wasn't a good GM. He also had to consider a loyalty to the fanbase and the players that he was managing.
What led Skip Schumaker to decide to leave the team? I've heard someone say that Peter Bendix "didn't try hard enough" to keep him. I find that to be a very odd take to have. We have no idea what was happening behind the scenes. Maybe Skip doesn't like Bendix. Maybe he wants to go to a different team for a new challenge. Maybe he feels that he'll be happier elsewhere. We don't know what conversations took place, so it's weird to just assume that Bendix didn't try enough to keep him.
We don't know why Skip Schumaker decided to leave the Miami Marlins. It is therefore pointless to make any judgments on what the team should or shouldn't have done. We don't know, and until we do there's nothing else that we can say.
