Miami Marlins have a new managerial candidate
The Miami Marlins need a new manager for the first time in years. The 2023 National League Manager of the Year Skip Schumaker is on his way out. This means that someone new has to take over. Who will it be? As the Marlins' division rivals are having a remarkable season, The Fish have a new managerial candidate.
The Miami Marlins have a new candidate to manage the team.
We don't yet know who is in contention to take over as the Miami Marlins manager. It feels like it will be a major story throughout the entire off-season. We can only guess as to whether it will be someone who has a lot of experience (specifically winning experience), or willing to hand the job over to someone who has no experience in that role in the Major Leagues. It seems that the former is more likely, but who really knows?
The candidate that threw his proverbial hat in the ring is none other than former Marlins starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez. Sanchez pitched for the team from 2006 to 2012. The former top prospect had a very memorable rookie season, as he pitched to a 2.83 ERA/4.22 FIP, with 5.7 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 18 games and 114.1 innings pitched that season. The FIP obviously wasn't ideal and a warning for the future.
After two injury-filled seasons in 2007 and 2008 with poor results, he settled in as more or less a mid-rotation starter from 2009 to 2011. He pitched to a 3.66 ERA/3.56 FIP, with 8.1 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 80 games and 477.1 innings pitched. He was a solid arm, but with the team in selling mode for the 2012 season. As a result, he found himself traded to the Detroit Tigers. In his final seasons with The Fish, he pitched to a 3.94 ERA/3.43 FIP, with 8.2 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 19 games and 121.0 innings pitched.
It turns out that he really enjoyed his time here, as he contacted the Miami Marlins about managing the team. As he has no managerial experience, I highly doubt that he will ultimately get the job.
