The Miami Marlins are adjusting the team in Spring Training, as management increasingly has to be transparent with the fanbase about the team's plans. This isn't a good time to look ahead for the season as a Fish fan. The playoffs are more of a fantasy at this point, as the team is just making minor transactions and preparing to hopefully develop some new stars. We've got a long season ahead.
Another minor transaction made by the Miami Marlins.
So what did the Miami Marlins do this time? Right-handed relief pitcher Seth Martinez has been designated by the assignment. Martinez has never actually pitched for The Fish, but has pitched for the Houston Astros from 2021 to 2024. During that time, he showed some promise but ultimately was never particularly impressive.
Martinez's best season came in 2022, when he pitched to a 2.09 ERA/3.32 FIP, with 8.8 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in 29 games and 38.2 innings pitched. This was an impressive break-out season, but sadly for Martinez, he never managed to top it later on. He followed that up with a down 2023 season. In that season, he pitched to a 5.23 ERA/4.42 FIP, with 9.4 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 in 35 games and 43.0 innings pitched.
Last season, Seth Martinez pitched to a respectable 3.59 ERA, but a disappointing 4.78 FIP, with 6.2 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 44 games and 52.2 innings pitched. Martinez's replacement is fellow right relief pitcher Brett de Geus, who was claimed from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Brett de Geus pitched for the Miami Marlins last season. He pitched to a 6.35 ERA/3.34 FIP, with 6.4 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in 7 games and 52.2 innings pitched. The ERA was terrible, but the FIP is very promising indeed. He hasn't been that good throughout his career though, as he pitched to a 7.48 ERA/4.83 FIP, with 5.6 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in 13 games and 11.1 innings pitched.
It appears that Peter Bendix simply sees Brett de Geus as a better relief pitcher than Seth Martinez. This explains him choosing one over another.
