Which three players should the Miami Marlins add to the roster? What three takeaways can we take from the recent media meetings? Those are the questions on our minds as we head into Spring Training. The Fish also made another transaction yesterday that continues to improve the team's bullpen depth. So how will Seth Martinez help The Fish?
Seth Martinez is the newest member of the Miami Marlins bullpen depth.
The Miami Marlins are sadly not expected to be good this upcoming season. A return to the playoffs for the first time since the 2023 season is clearly not in the cards. The best hope is that the team will at least have some breakouts and some stars of the future can be found.
The Fish claimed right-handed relief pitcher Seth Martinez off of waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 30 year old had a forgettable "cup of coffee" in 2021 with the Houston Astros, but actually broke out in the 2022 season. That season, he pitched to a 2.09 ERA/3.32 FIP, with 8.8 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 29 games and 38.2 innings pitched. That was a very promising breakout for Houston's bullpen. They of course won the World Series that season.
Martinez followed that up in the 2023 season with a 5.23 ERA/4.42 FIP, with 9.4 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 in 35 games and 43.0 innings pitched. That was a very disappointing follow-up and definitely made him look like an expendable part of Houston's relief corps. He did however improve in the 2024 season. That season, he pitched to a 3.59 ERA/4.78 FIP, with 6.2 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 44 games and 52.2 innings pitched.
It seems to me that Seth Martinez isn't expected to be a major part of The Fish's bullpen. He's just there simply for some depth. He had issues with his strikeouts last season, but he did have good results otherwise in 2024 and 2022. It would be interesting to see if he can put it all together in 2025. I'm definitely interested to see everything that he has to offer the team here.
