Miami Marlins make most of golden opportunity, start season 5-1

Miami couldn't afford to leave town without a winning homestand given the rough schedule ahead. They did just that against the Rockies and White Sox, feasting on weak competition.

Too often in recent years, the Miami Marlins have struggled out of the gate.

Fortunately for them, MLB has yet to relegate the Colorado Rockies and Chicago White Sox to the Pioneer League. Even more fortunately, Miami was able to take advantage, wrapping up their first homestand with a 5-1 record after Wednesday's dominant 10-0 shellacking of the South Siders.

Given what the schedule looks like the rest of the month, it really looked essential for Miami to start fast. That was broken down on the site right before the start of the season, with the takeaway being just the staggering amount of 2025 playoff competition the Marlins will face over the next month plus. Four of the next five series come against 2025 playoff squads, and that lone exception is a road series against the Braves. In other words, not fun.

However, games aren't won on paper, they're won on the field. Last year's Marlins got swept at home by a Rockies team even worse than the one they just faced, and went 4-5 combined against the Rockies and White Sox. Good teams win the ones they're supposed to and avoid falling into that trap of playing down to lesser competition.

Mission accomplished so far for the Marlins.

Two series, two victories. That gives Miami some cushion heading into a very tough environment this weekend when they'll take on the New York Yankees...during their home opening series. Needless to say, the quality of competition will be just a touch higher. Really, any team that didn't play in the World Series last year would struggle to win under those conditions. So a bit of a fall back to earth shouldn't come as shock. Should the winning continue in the Bronx, expectations for this Marlins group will really start to soar.

With all due respect to the Rockies and White Sox, these wins can only be taken so seriously. However, everything that the Marlins would need to do to be competitive in 2026 was done this weekend. Sandy Alcantara showing signs of being all the way back. A continuation of that gritty, in it to the very end mentality from the Marlins clubhouse. A player or two stepping up to help the offense, as Owen Caissie and Liam Hicks (Team Canada!) just did.

Plus, there's also the fact that all of this was done without Miami's presumptive best hitter in the lineup. Surviving the temporary absence of Kyle Stowers was a late addition to the equation of a successful 2026 Miami Marlins season. So far, so good on that score as well.

It's a long season ahead to be sure. But it's also hard to imagine the Marlins having been able to start it off any better.
