The Miami Marlins are still waiting to sign some free agents. Interestingly, a former player is still out there available on the free agent market. Do you remember him? I'm talking about relief pitcher Tanner Scott of course. The Fish's rivals are still looking for another bat. Will the New York Mets bring back first baseman Pete Alonso? Will they sign third baseman Alex Bregman? We can only speculate for now.
Miami Marlins news and notes for today.
Let's start with former Miami Marlins relief pitcher Tanner Scott. He debuted with the team in the 2022 season. That season, Scott pitched to a disappointing 4.31 ERA/3.67 FIP, with 12.9 K/9 and 6.6 BB/9 in 67 games and 62.2 innings pitched. He also had 20 saves. He did much better in the 2023 season. That season, he pitched to a 2.31 ERA/2.17 FIP, with 12.0 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 74 games and 78.0 innings pitched. He also added 12 saves as the team's closer.
Tanner Scott pitched for both The Fish and the San Diego Padres in the 2024 season. He was of course traded to San Diego mid-season. Pitching for both teams, Scott pitched to a very impressive 1.75 ERA/2.92 FIP, with 10.5 K/9 and 4.5 BB/9 in 72 games and 72.0 innings pitched.
The news have been relatively quiet on Scott this off-season, but it looks like he will eventually sign somewhere. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been mentioned as one of the known suitors for him. We'll see where he will sign and how much he will get.
Will the New York Mets bring back Pete Alonso? It's a possibility. It doesn't seem like the market has been very excited for him. He can of course surprise us and still get a decent deal. There's speculation that if the Mets don't bring him back, they can pivot to signing Alex Bregman. Either one would be a good signing for the team, as they definitely need to add another bat to try and make a playoff run in the 2025 season. It will be interesting to see how it goes.
