The Miami Marlins lost one starting pitcher before the off-season even started, and now there's another one. It's bad enough there's injuries to important hitters on the team as well. The injury in question is to none other than Edward Cabrera. It will be interesting to see what will happen next, but we know that it won't include Peter Bendix adding any replacement arms in free agency.
Edward Cabrera is the latest injured Miami Marlins player.
Edward Cabrera used to be a top prospect for the Miami Marlins. There was a lot of hype for him and there's still hope that he can turn things around and live up to his once touted potential. Cabrera debuted on the Major League team back in 2021. That season, he pitched to a 5.81 ERA/6.63 FIP, with 9.6 K/9 and 6.5 BB/9 in 7 games and 26.1 innings pitched. The strikeouts were there, but the control and the results weren't good at all.
In 2022, Cabrera pitched to an excellent 3.01 ERA, with a less impressive 4.59 FIP, with 9.4 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 14 games and 71.2 innings pitched. He improved his control and for a while was even pretty dominant, but it was clear that he wasn't yet fully living up to his potential.
In the 2023 season, Edward Cabrera pitched to a 4.24 ERA/4.43 FIP, with 10.7 K/9 and 6.0 BB/9 in 22 games and 99.2 innings pitched. He went back to not pitching like an ace, and the control declined. That said, the strikeout stuff was improved. The 2024 season saw him pitch to a 4.95 ERA/4.68 FIP, with 10.0 K/9 and 4.7 BB/9 in 20 games and 96.1 innings pitched. It's become clear that the strikeout stuff is there, but he isn't putting it all together or getting enough innings to do so.
He's now dealing with a blister on the middle finger on his throwing hand. He's had issues with blisters since back in 2021. He will start the season on the IL, but will hopefully be back fast. This could be a breakout season for the 26 year old.
