A certain free agent hitter is suddenly in high demand. The player's incumbent team the New York Mets are interested in re-signing him, but it the market isn't limited to just those Miami Marlins rivals. The Los Angeles Angels have been named, and now the Boston Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays. So where will free agent first baseman Pete Alonso end up?
Miami Marlins rival hitter may have a new home in 2025.
The Miami Marlins are obviously better when other divisional teams are worse. The New York Mets will certainly not improve if they lose a power hitter such as Pete Alonso. I certainly don't blame the Mets for putting a particular price tag on Alonso and sticking to it however either. The slugger isn't a good defender, doesn't hit for contact well and could age poorly. He at least has the profile of such a player.
All of the above said, you just can't lose a 40 home run bat from the middle of your lineup and end up being a better team. Both the Boston Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays can be seen as odd fits for Alonso. Boston have Triston Casas at first base, and Toronto has Vladimir Guerrero Jr. You can argue that Casas is nothing special, as he batted just .241/.337/.462, with 13 home runs and 32 RBI in 63 games and 212 AB in 2024.
It's of course a bit different with Toronto, as Vlad is an elite first baseman who batted .323/.396/.544, with 30 home runs and 103 RBI in 159 games and 616 AB in 2024. Vlad was worth 6.2 WAR in 2024, while Casas was worth just 0.6. Boston can always trade Casas to make room for Alonso, but Toronto isn't trading the better Vlad. Of course, Vlad is a free agent after this upcoming season, which could influence them to sign Alonso as insurance in case he leaves, playing DH this season.
The longer the off-season goes, the less likely I see a reunion between the New York Mets and Pete Alonso. That's good for the Miami Marlins.
