The Atlanta Braves have been making sure that their hole in left field is adequately filled. They keep making moves, and now made yet another one. It's definitely not helping the Miami Marlins in being a better team in the 2025 season. I'm curious to see if The Fish will improve, but it certainly looks likes Atlanta will be making quite a push to contend this upcoming season.
Miami Marlins rivals Atlanta Braves made a big signing.
The Miami Marlins are unlikely to be good this upcoming season, and now the Atlanta Braves have become an even better team. They clearly are no longer high on Jarred Kelenic. The left fielder batted just .231/.286/.393, with 15 home runs and 45 RBI in 131 games and 412 AB. He was worth just 0.4 WAR. It looks like he will be on the bench at this point.
Bryan De La Cruz batted .233/.271/.384 between the Miami Marlins and the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2024. He hit 21 home runs and drove in 68 RBI in 149 games and 584 AB. He was worth an atrocious -1.5 WAR for that performance, due to his horrible defense. De La Cruz has been brought in as depth, rather than as an actual starter.
The new starter in left field for Atlanta is Jurickson Profar. Profar had a very good season in 2024. He batted .280/.380/.459, with 24 home runs and 85 RBI in 158 games and 564 AB. He was worth 3.6 WAR for that performance. Atlanta signed him for 3 years/$42 million. This is yet another blow to his former team, the San Diego Padres.
Profar hasn't been consistent throughout his career, which began as a top prospect with the Texas Rangers about a decade ago. The 31 year old is a career .245/.331/.395 hitter, who was only worth 8.4 WAR for his 11 year career. It's clear that teams weren't very confident in him repeating his 2024 production. Don't forget that he did bat .242/.321/.368 in 2023 with the Colorado Rockies and the San Diego Padres. It's definitely an interesting move for the Atlanta Braves.
