Miami Marlins should target pitcher in free agency

The Miami Marlins have been getting some injuries and it makes sense for Peter Bendix to look to improve the team's pitching depth. It's the time to start making moves as Spring Training is ending, and the season is about to begin this week. Left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz is certainly an interesting player to target, as he was released from his Minor League deal with the Seattle Mariners.

With all of the injuries, it makes perfect sense for the Miami Marlins to target another starting or relief pitcher. Drew Pomernaz hasn't been that bad in Spring Training, having a 4.70 ERA in 8 games and 6.2 innings pitched. More importantly, he was pretty good as recently as the 2021 season. He pitched to a 1.75 ERA/3.01 FIP, with 10.5 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 in 27 games and 25.2 innings pitched. He pitched for the San Diego Padres during that season.

You may have noticed that that Drew Pomeranz is a relief pitcher instead of a starting pitcher, so does that mean that he isn't really that necessary? I disagree. He is the type of reliever that I can see pitching bulk innings, acting like a bit of an "opener" type pitcher. That's something that could be useful for The Fish, with more arms being a major necessity.

Drew Pomeranz was also pretty good in the 2020 season. Also pitching for San Diego, he pitched to a 1.45 ERA/2.39 FIP, with 14.0 K/9 and 4.8 BB/9 in 20 games and 18.2 innings pitched. He was doing really well in those two seasons, and even though you can argue that it was quite some time ago, I don't see it as being enough of a while, where he can't still pitch at that level.

Drew Pomeranz is 36 years old, so he is still in his prime years though likely about to be in decline, and could still be very effective. Peter Bendix should look into signing him for the Miami Marlins, as he should be cheap and has enough upside to make the signing worthwhile. It will be interesting to see whether Bendix will actually have interest in him.
