It's hard to be optimistic about the 2025 season and The Fish won't be making much-needed trades unfortunately. The Miami Marlins are however busy bringing in depth. The latest addition was none other than catcher Rob Brantly, who was signed to a Minor League deal. This is just a depth move but it's still a necessary one to make for Peter Bendix.
The Miami Marlins signed Rob Brantly to a Minor League deal.
Catcher Rob Brantly is the latest addition to the Miami Marlins. The veteran catcher is already 35 years old. He has a career .222/.284/.322 batting line over his nine years in the Major Leagues. His value for that run is a dreadful -1.5 WAR. He's clearly not some elite slugger unfortunately.
Brantly is no stranger to The Fish, having played for the team in both the 2012 and 2013 seasons. He batted .235/.298/.325 for those two seasons, and was worth -1.2 WAR. That was a very unimpressive performance, and it's definitely not one that The Fish probably hope that he replicates again. Brantly played for both the Chicago White Sox in the 2015 and the 2017 seasons.
He played for the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2019 season. He moved on to the San Francisco Giants for the 2020 season. He played for the New York Yankees in the 2021 and the 2022 seasons. He played for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2024. That season, he batted .111/.111/.111 with no home runs and no RBI in 3 games and 9 AB. He was worth 0.0 WAR.
I mean I'm not sure how else to put this...Rob Brantly was never a star in the Mjaor Leagues. In fact, he never even had an above average season in his entire career. You don't have to be a star to be a useful player, but I'm honestly unsure what he really has to offer the Miami Marlins at all. It's a strict depth Minor League signing. It's sad that with Spring Training approaching, The Fish haven't made any meaningful upgrades to the roster. This is actually very frustrating.
