Fansided's SODO Mojo recently published an article speculating that the Seattle Mariners could target Miami Marlins closer Calvin Faucher in a trade. The deal would bolster Seattle's bullpen as they seek to return to postseason contention in 2025.
Does this trade make sense for the Mariners?
Seattle profiles as an ideal trade partner. While their primary focus should be on adding hitters to supplement their excellent rotation, adding another proven bullpen arm also makes sense.
Andrés Muñoz has been highly effective since taking over the closer role. Collin Snider has also been effective as a supplementary option. Otherwise, the Mariners' bullpen includes inconsistent options.
Adding a lower-cost player like Faucher would complement Seattle's greatest strength. SOHO Mojo is wise to recommend targeting Miami's closer.
Does this trade make sense for the Marlins?
A deal could also benefit the rebuilding Marlins. Seattle's team president, Jerry Dipoto, is famous for his aggressive trading philosophy. He, as much as any other executive, is an ideal trade partner to pair with Peter Bendix.
Additionally, Faucher isn't an essential part of the rebuilding Marlins' long-term plan. While he is projected to close for the club in 2025, this season is much more about player development than on-field success. The club currently holds the third-worst odds to win the upcoming World Series. Losing Faucher will not affect a team with virtually no postseason aspirations.
Miami's closer is also older than many would assume. Despite the fact that he made his major-league debut as recently as 2022, Faucher is already 29 years old. He could provide valuable bullpen depth for the next few seasons, he is likely too old to be a part of the next winning version of the Marlins.
What could the Marlins request in return?
Faucher has the most value to a win-now team like Seattle. He performed quite admirably after Miami parted way with All-Star Tanner Scott, posting a 3.19 ERA and six saves for a poor Marlins team.
On the higher end, perhaps Peter Bendix could request a player like Brandyn Garcia. The lefty pitcher is currently Seattle's #16 ranked prospect.
Names like infielder Brock Rodden (#22), righty Jimmy Joyce (#23), catcher Josh Carson (#24), or pitcher Dylan Wilson (#26) would also be sensible targets.
If Dipoto and the Mariners are serious about upgrading their bullpen with a high-upside setup man, a deal between Seattle and Miami makes sense for both parties.
