MLB.com has an interesting belief about the Miami Marlins off-season. They suggest that the recently honored and nominated starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo could be moved this off-season. Luzardo was injured to close out the 2024 season. This by itself makes it a hard rumor to buy. Could it actually happen though? Should it happen in the first place? I have some thoughts about that...
Jesus Luzardo is unlikely to be traded by the Miami Marlins.
Jesus Luzardo was pretty bad for the Miami Marlins in the 2024 season. He pitched to a 5.00 ERA/4.26 FIP, with 7.8 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 12 games and 66.2 innings pitched. It was a poor season due to injury, as a healthy Luzardo is a significantly better pitcher.
How does the healthy Jesus Luzardo do? Back in 2023, he pitched to a 3.58 ERA/3.55 FIP, with 10.5 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 32 games and 178.2 innings pitched. He did good in 2022 as well, pitching to a 3.32 ERA/3.12 FIP, with 10.8 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9, in 18 games and 100.1 innings pitched.
Teams typically like to see how a pitcher is before they trade for him. At this point, we don't know how he'll do next season. I certainly hope that he's going to be healthy and productive, but realistically I don't know how he'll do. No one really does, which is why teams are going to be wary to give up much of value for him.
There's no reason for the Miami Marlins to sell low on Jesus Luzardo either. If Luzardo is to be traded, then he has to bring back a pretty strong return. There's no reason to sell low on him, which is the only real possibility this off-season due to the uncertainty with his production going forward, I just don't see any reason for The Fish to trade Jesus Luzardo unless the return is as if he's at his best. There's no way that any team will pay that price, with all of the uncertainty surrounding the young top of the rotation arm. In other words, it won't happen.
