Bad news are suddenly mounting for Miami Marlins rivals. In the meantime, The Fish actually had a good start to the season. It's definitely not at all how we expected this season to go, at least so far. It's still too early to make any definitive predictions down the line, but things are certainly not going as we all expected them to. An interesting transaction happened along the way as well.

Philly claimed a Miami Marlins relief pitcher.

The Miami Marlins shook up the pitching staff, and one of those moves involved designating relief pitcher Brett De Geus for assignment. De Geus has now been claimed by the Philadelphia Phillies in turn. Will The Fish miss De Geus at all? De Geus pitched for The Fish in the 2024 season. That season, he pitched to a 6.35 ERA/3.34 FIP, with 6.4 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in 7 games and 5.2 innings pitched.

The 27 year old righty reliever is more of a depth piece at this point in his career. He can always theoretically take steps forward and get better, relievers are volatile enough that something like that can certainly happen. That said, who really knows. He may just end up being a depth piece permanently.

I assume that the Philadelphia Phillies see him as more of a depth piece too, and that they don't really see him as someone who is breaking out or anything like that. Overall last season, he pitched for the Seattle Mariners, then the Miami Marlins and finally the Toronto Blue Jays. He pitched to a 7.15 ERA/3.78 FIP, with 5.6 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in 13 games and 11.1 innings pitched.

There's definitely some potential with that FIP, making me think that it's in fact possible that Brett De Geus can suddenly have an impressive season out of nowhere. I don't really know if or when it will happen, but it certainly looks like it could happen.

The Miami Marlins won't necessarily miss De Geus right now, but if he suddenly has a big season...It would definitely make me see him being waived and claimed by Philly as a loss.
