A trade to help solve the Miami Marlins injured pitcher issues
This bad contract swap could solve The Fish's injury woes
Avisail Garcia is one of the worst contracts in Miami Marlins history. Over the last two seasons, he's batted .215/.260/.316 in 135 games and 465 AB. The Fish still owe him $24 million over the next two seasons, along with a $5 million buyout. I suggested some wishful thinking bad contract swaps before. With all of the recent pitching injuries, could another one make sense? This one with the Chicago Cubs...
Could the Miami Marlins make a bad contract swap with the Chicago Cubs.
Avisail Garcia needs to go and can't be wasting a much-needed roster spot on The Fish. I don't think anyone out there who is a Miami Marlins fan, wants him to continue ruining rallies and ending innings with strikeouts. He needs to go and if it's too expensive to simply release him, then he must be traded somewhere. He doesn't have value, so it only works in a bad contract swap.
Would the Chicago Cubs consider flipping SP Drew Smyly for him? The lefty is owed $8.5 million for the 2024 season, and has a $10 million mutual option on the 2025 one (with a $2.5 million buyout). The Fish could potentially eat some of the money on Avisail's contract to make this swap work.
It's true, Chicago might rather have pitching depth than an extra OF, but what if they're just too disapponted in Smyly? The Cubs have quite a few young options for the rotation and might want to get rid of someone who's been pretty subpar for them so far. The injury-prone Smyly has a 4.34 ERA/4.65 FIP over the last two seasons, with 8.4 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9. Last season, he had a 5.00 ERA/4.96 FIP.
Fine, Drew Smyly isn't as bad as Avisail Garcia. He's cheaper too, but Cubs nation is seemingly very tired of Smyly on social media and I did mention all of those starting pitching options that the team has. I'm probably grasping at straws here, but can someone just please take Avisail Garcia off of The Fish's hands? Please? He just can't be hurting the team much longer!
