Last week I wrote about former Miami Marlins second baseman Luis Arraez. The Fish have some breakout hitters this season, it's obvious that none of them are as elite contact-wise as Arraez was. So, what did Arraez do recently that put him back in he news? Arraez has been chasing yet another batting title and has been able to avoid strikeouts for weeks in a big achievement.
Luis Arraez has been making waves since leaving the Miami Marlins.
There was a lot of controversy when the Miami Marlins traded Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres. Arraez wasn't hitting free agency until after next season, so it seemed way too early for the team to trade him. It also happened well before the Trade Deadline, when he appeared to be having a down season. Peter Bendix was criticized in a big way by the fanbase.
Luis Arraez batted an incredible .354/.393/.469, with 10 home runs and 69 RBI in 147 games and 574 AB. He won the National League Batting Title and was worth 4.9 WAR. This season wasn't quite the same, as he's batted .323/.356/.396 with 4 home runs and 43 RBI, in 141 games and 601 AB 9as of Tuesday). He's been worth just 1.3 WAR this season due to his below average defense. This also seems to be the reason why Bendix traded him, as he clearly values defense quite a bit.
In a remarkable stretch, Luis Arraez didn't have a strikeout from August 10 to September 15. Then September 16 happened and the streak came to an abrupt end. Arraez was struck out by Houston Astros starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti. It was a full count and Arraez took a swing at a curveball. He ended up missing and the streak was done.
Arraez will still have a chance to compete for a third straight batting title and he's certainly still an important part of San Diego's lineup. San Diego is headed to the playoffs and even have a chance to win their division. Sadly, the Miami Marlins won't be joining them in October.
