How are Miami Marlins Trade Deadline acquisitions doing?
The Miami Marlins had a busy Trade Deadline. Kim Ng acquired a new first baseman in Josh Bell; a new third baseman in Jake Burger; a new closer in David Robertson; and more bullpen help in the form of Jorge Lopez. How did those players work out so far?
The Miami Marlins had a busy Trade Deadline and it mostly worked out.
Kim Ng's bullpen moves don't seem to have worked out so well for The Fish. Jorge Lopez has been a bust with the Miami Marlins. He had a 9.26 ERA/5.32 FIP, with 6.2 K/9 and 6.9 BB/9 in 12 games and 11.2 innings pitched. He was worth -0.5 WAR before being designated for assignment.
David Robertson didn't do much better. He lost his closing job, and has so far produced a 7.50 EA/5.26 FIP, with 9.8 K/9 and 5.3 BB/9 in 12 games and 12.0 innings. He's been worth -0.8 WAR. In total, both relief pitchers have been worth an astonishingly bad -1.3 WAR. The bullpen was certainly not improved after these transactions. Of course, Kim also made moves to improve the lineup.
The Miami Marlins may not have improved the bullpen at the Trade Deadline, but the lineup was a different story. 3B Jake Burger has been a revelation, as he's batted .314/.374/.525 with 6 home runs and 16 RBI, in 31 games and 118 AB since joining The Fish. He's been worth 0.8 WAR. He was batting .214/.279/.527 with the Chicago White Sox.
First baseman Josh Bell has batted .273/.333/.529, with 9 home runs and 16 RBI, in 31 games and 121 AB. He's been worth 0.4 WAR. Bell has been doing much better than he was doing with the Cleveland Guardians. He was batting .233/.318/.382 with them.
Jake Burger and Josh Bell have been major additions to the Miami Marlins lineup. The same can't be said for David Robertson and Jorge Lopez as the bullpen additions. It seems that relief pitching being so volatile, has been the biggest issue for Kim Ng. Hopefully she will have better luck in that area in the off-season.
