Miami Marlins acquire power bat from Chicago!
The Miami Marlins did indeed participate in the Chicago White Sox fire sale! It wasn't the big name that I wanted, but it was still a very good power bat. The Fish acquired 3B/DH Jake Burger from the Chicago White Sox for pitching prospect Jake Eder. Let's take a look at the trade, and see how this looks for the Miami Marlins.
Miami Marlins acquired Jake Burger from the Chicago White Sox.
Jean Segura has been a disappointment for the Miami Marlins at third base this season. The off-season signing is batting .219/.277/.279, with 3 home runs and 21 RBI in 85 games and 301 AB. The career .281/.327/.401 hitter has a dreadful -1.7 WAR. Segura has been hitting better as of late, but he's been such a disaster this season, that moving on from him as a starter seemed an obvious route to improving the team.
Jake Eder is a lefty who has a career 2.60 ERA in the Minor Leagues. He struggled in A and AA so far this season, delivering a 4.12 ERA in 9 games and 39.1 innings pitched. He has 11.0 K/9 and 4.8 BB/9. Eder is 24 years old and is a bit old for the AA level. He might have some type of future as a long reliever and spot starter in the Major Leagues. The Chicago White Sox might even give him a shot at the rotation during their lost season.
What does Jake Burger bring to the Miami Marlins? Jake is a 27 year old right handed hitter who debuted in 2021. He batted .263/.333/.474 with a home run and 3 RBI, in 15 games and 38 AB that season. In 2022, he batted .250/.302/.458 with 8 home runs and 26 RBI, in 51 games and 168 AB. This has however beena breakout season for the slugger. He's currently batting .214/.279/.527 with 25 home runs and 52 RBI, in 88 games and 294 AB.
Jake Burger is worth -0.4 dWAR and 1.3 WAR. He is a very good power hitter, who will add pop to the lineup and be a potential replacement for Jorge Soler at DH next season.
