Injured Marlins starting pitcher might have a more serious issue
The Miami Marlins have been busy making roster moves as next season is now the focus. The Fish had a lot of injured starting pitchers this season, but Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, Jesus Luzardo and Braxton Garrett are all expected to come back next season. That is the first three....there may now be questions about the latter. Garrett had a setback and will not pitch again this season.
Bad news for Miami Marlins starting pitcher Braxton Garrett.
Braxton Garrett wasn't impressive (to say the least) in his first two seasons on The Fish in 2020-2021. During that time span, he pitched to a 5.18 ERA/5.07 FIP, with 8.6 K/9 and 5.4 BB/9 in 10 games and 41.2 innings pitched. Nothing was positive about these results except for the strikeout rate.
Things would get better for Garrett when he would receive more playing time in 2022. That season, he pitched to a 3.58 ERA/3.56 FIP, with 9.2 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 17 games and 88.0 innings pitched. This was a very promising breakout and there was genuine excitement for what he could do the following season.
The 2023 season saw Braxton Garrett pitch in 31 games and 159.2 innings pitched. He pitched to a 3.66 ERA/3.68 FIP, with 8.8 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9. This showed that he could be a solid mid-rotation starter going forward. Could he do even better this season? We will never know as he barely pitched due to injury.
This season, Garrett pitched to a 5.35 ERA/3.82 FIP, with 8.3 K/9 and 1.0 BB/9. The results were similar to the previous season, but he was only unfortunately able to do so in 7 games and 37.0 innings pitched. It's a very small sample size so we don't know how he would've done over the course of the entire season.
Braxton Garrett was supposed to pitch today, but he won't as he felt something in his elbow after throwing a bullpen training session on Friday. He had this to say:
“Super disappointing. Just the whole year has been disappointing, not being able to get back healthy. The shoulder early, just couldn't quite get there. It's hard to take you through the whole process, but I was down in Jupiter for so long, working very hard, especially on the shoulder and coming back, and the elbow popped up again. We're just trying to find answers, so we're doing the best we can.”
I hope that we see Braxton Garrett pitching next season for the Miami Marlins.
