This season is obviously not going very well for the Miami Marlins. Next season however has some hopeful prospects, while The Fish keep shuffling the roster with some pitching moves. Yet more have just been made today and it probably won't stop anytime soon. This isn't a bad thing, but it can get a bit confusing, when you don't remember who is left in the bullpen!
More roster moves made by the Miami Marlins.
Let's start with the relief pitcher who has been optioned back down to the Minor Leagues. He's been demoted to Triple A Jacksonville to be more precise. The player that I'm talking about is righty reliever George Soriano. The 25 year old had a pretty bad 6.75 ERA/6.04 FIP, with 8.9 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 in 22 games and 29.1 innings pitched.
I mean it's pretty clear that there's nothing really positive about his results. The strikeout rate is above average, but the walk rate is obviously below average. The ERA/FIP is obviously just plain bad. Of course Soriano has basically been bullpen pitching depth this whole time, so he'll find his way back to the Major Leagues at some point. At least it's likely that he might.
Replacing George Soriano, is 29 year old righty relief pitcher Shaun Anderson. Anderson has an even worse 9.64 ERA/5.10 FIP, with 5.8 K/9 and 0.6 BB/9 in 5 games and 14.0 innings pitched. I'm actually not sure why he's supposed to be a better option than Soriano. He's never really been good in his career, pitching to a 6.19 ERA/5.01 FIP, with 7.0 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 in his 5 year career.
There's no problem with giving Anderson another shot, a slong a she actually delivers. At this point wins and losses don't matter. It's all about the future and seeing if the Miami Marlins can build a winning core going forward. Neither of these pitchers are likely to make a difference, but who knows who might break out. By the way, DFA'd righty reliever Jeff Lindgren hasn't been claimed and is going back down to the Minor Leagues.
