Marlins make a decision on a recently designated pitcher
As the season is winding down, the Miami Marlins are figuring out the lineup for next season. There's also the possibility of a Marlins pitcher winning a prestigious award. It will be interesting how the off-season goes as it's unlikely that Peter Bendix will spend that much money on contracts. In the meantime, The Fish made another transaction. Lefty relief pitcher Jonathan Bermudez has been demoted to the Minor Leagues.
The Miami Marlins demoted a relief pitcher to the Minors.
Jonathan Bermudez wasn't a key reliever for the team, but he is a nice depth arm to have. He actually only pitched this season, as it was his Major League debut. He pitched in 3 games and even received one start. He totaled 6.2 innings pitched for his work.
Bermudez wasn't particularly impressive as he's pitched to a 8.10 ERA/7.67 FIP, with an unimpressive 5.4 K/9 and an OK 2.7 BB/9. He was better for the Miami Marlins in the Minor Leagues. In both AA and AAA, he pitched to a 3.48 ERA in 20 games and 17 starts, in 98.1 innings pitched. He had 9.0 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9.
It's actually pretty interesting that Bermudez received as many starts as he did in the Minors. I wonder if he will get more starts the next time that he gets called up to the Majors. He's already 28 years old, so he's clearly a bit of a late-bloomer. I don't see it as likely to expect him to be much better than he's been so far. I do see him having a better ERA and perhaps even being somewhat more effective with more experience.
It's pretty clear that the most important role that Jonathan Bermudez has on the team is to simply be pitching depth. It's an important role, despite being far from glamorous. Every team has to deal with injuries and there's always a need for another arm in the bullpen throughout the season. That's a role that Bermudez can handle for the Miami Marlins going forward.
No team claimed Bermudez (probably due to his age and lack of track record), as a result he's been demoted back down to the Minor Leagues.
