Roberto Clemente is a legend in the Major Leagues. He has a .317/.359/.475 batting line for his 18 year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has a 94.9 WAR for his career. The Hall of Famer died on New Year's Eve in 1972 in a plane crash. The plane crash was when he attempted to deliver emergency supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The Roberto Clemente Award has been created to honor players who do philanthropic work that impacts communities.
So which Miami Marlins player has been nominated for the award and what did they do to receive the nomination? The answer is starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo. the pitcher cares about his hometown of Miami quite abit. He's worked with the Miami Marlins Foundation, but also hosted his own events, showing his commitment to different important causes.
He actually hosts a free baseball clinic for young people. This incorporates his high school: Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. That happens to be his alma mater. He also visits the Challenger Baseball League. That league is based in Parkland, FL and is a program that helps kids with disabilities and special needs. He also participated in five different camps hosted by the Marlins Foundation over the past three seasons. He went even further and launched the Luzardo Family Foundation to help kids from underserved communities, with the plan to help them reach their full potential.
