Miami Marlins lose a key pitcher to injury and other moves
The Miami Marlins made some moves today...and by "some" I mean a LOT. These moves aren't going to affect the team's core and have nothing to do with hopeful free agent pursuits. They are relevant though and there's a lot of them. Without further ado, let's get into it!
A lot of roster turnover for the Miami Marlins this weekend.
Starting Pitcher Max Meyer has right shoulder bursitis and is now on the 15-day IL. I strongly suspect that he won't pitch again this season. Perhaps this injury explains his lackluster recent results. He currently has a 5.68 ERA/5.92 FIP for the season, with 7.3 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 11 games and 57.0 innings pitched.
Closer Calvin Faucher has shoulder impingemenbt syndrome and is also now on the 15-day IL. He's been good since getting the job, so I hope that he gets to pitch again this season. CF Derek Hill is going on the 10-day IL. He's batting .227/.242/.409, with 4 home runs and 17 RBI in 25 games and 88 AB for The Fish this season.
Lefty reliever Andrew Nardi is officially done for the season. He pitched to a poor but unlucky 5.07 ERA, with an impressive 3.34 FIP, with a very impressive 12.7 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 59 games and 49.2 innings pitched. Left-handed pitcher Austin Kitchen has been designated for assignment with a 14.14 ERA/5.18 FIP, with a poor 5.1 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 in 4 games and 7.0 innings pitched.
Righty reliever Anthony Maldonado was optioned to AAA after posting a 6.75 ERA/3.56 FIP, with 6.2 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 14 games and 16.0 innings pitched. He'll probably get calle dup again this season. Former closer Anthony Bender is back and may get himself some late-inning work. The righty has a 4.00 ERA/2.96 FIP with 10.0 K/9 and 2.6 B/9, in 50 games and 45.0 innings pitched this season.
Fellow righty reliever George Soriano is back as well, despite horrible results this season. He has a 6.26 ERA/5.61 FIP, with a promising 9.4 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 in 19 games and 23.0 innings pitched. Another righty reliever Lake Bachar got a call-up as well. Lefty reliever Jonathan Bermudez will get another shot this season (4.91 ERA/5.09 FIP this season) and utility hitter Javier Sanoja gets his first call-up as well.
We'll see if these moves will benefit the Miami Marlins.
