Marlins quietly traded with division rivals at the busy Trade Deadline and more
All of the headlines were grabbed on Tuesday by a certain trade. Some other moves happened then as well. As all these trades and their details trickle down, it's a good time to reflect and think about how they currently look. The Miami Marlins made a perhaps intra-division trade with the division rival New York Mets. Another trade, this time for a starting pitcher looked intriguing and one looked like a shocker to me.
Miami Marlins traded a relief pitcher to the New York Mets.
So who is the relief pitcher that The Fish traded to the Mets? None other than righty Huascar Brazoban. Brazoban is a 34 year old who has a career 3.56 ERA/3.62 FIP, with 10.3 K/9 and 4.7 BB/9. This season, he has a 2.93 ERA/2.63 FIP, with 10.0 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in 20 games and 30.2 innings pitched. He's quietly having a great season, but it's unlikely that he'll keep this up for too long. 3B Wilfredo Lara was the prospect going back. He's an OF who is more of a developmental project. I wish that the return was higher.
The bigger deal was of course the move between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Detroit Tigers. SP Jack Flaherty is going from the latter to the former. Flaherty is having one hell of a platform season, delivering a 2.95 ERA/3.11 FIP, with 11.2 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9 in 18 games and 106.2 innings pitched. He hasn't been this good for years, not since his 2019 season, when he had a 2.75 ERA/3.46 FIP, with 10.6 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 33 games and 196.1 innings pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals.
From 2020 to 2023 with St. Louis and the Baltimore Orioles, he delivered a 4.42 ERA/4.36 FIP, with 9.5 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 in 64 games and 299.0 innings pitched. The return has been worse than what The Fish got for Trevor Rogers. No top 100 prospects came to Detroit, C Thayron Liranzo and SS Trey Sweeney were the players going back.
I'm also surprised that the Chicago White Sox sold so low on former foundational piece DH Eloy Jimenez. They sent him to the Baltimore Orioles for Minor League LHP Trey McGough. He's #37 on the list of Baltimore's prospects. I'm honestly still in shock at how bad this return had been for Chicago. Eloy may actually be a backup in Baltimore too.
