Miami Marlins 2022 draft pick updates: rounds 2-4

The Miami Marlins 2022 draft picks are obviously early on in their careers, so we will look at a couple of players drafted in 2022, as the updates will be shorter. The Marlins drafted pitchers in rounds 2 through 12 after drafting Jacob Berry in the first round. We will look at their production in the minor leagues so far and where they are currently playing as we move forward.

Jacob Miller, RHP

The Miami Marlins 2nd round pick Jacob Miller was drafted out of high school, playing for Liberty Union High School in Ohio. Last year Miller started four games in the minor leagues, three of which were for rookie ball. Miller had a rough start to rookie ball, which is understandable, and pitched 3.2 innings and gave up 3 runs on 5 hits, including one home run. His final start of the year came in Jupiter where he went 5.2 innings, giving up 5 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 6 batters.

This year for low A Jupiter, Miller has 9 total starts with a total of 40.2 innings pitched. His ERA sits at 4.65 with a WHIP of 1.156 while averaging 7.1 strikeouts per 9 innings. Overall he seems to be pitching well, giving up only 2 home runs this year, but his control could improve as he is averaging 4.1 walks per 9 innings.

Karson Milbrandt, RHP

The Miami Marlins 3rd round pick in the 2022 draft was high school pitcher Karson Milbrandt out of Liberty Senior High School in Missouri. After being drafted, Milbrandt only had one appearance last year with low A Jupiter. He started and pitched 2.0 innings and gave up 2 hits and allowed 2 runs.

This year he has started 11 games and over 47.1 innings he is posting a 5.89 ERA and 1.521 WHIP. Milbrandt has only allowed 4 home runs this year and has a high average of 8.9 strikeouts per nine innings but conversely, he has a high walk rate per 9 innings at 4.8 and has given up 47 hits in 47 innings. He has room to grow but he is only 19, so hopefully he can develop more control which will hopefully result in fewer hits and walks allowed.
