Earlier today the Miami Marlins promoted relief pitcher Sean Reynolds from the Minor Leagues. It's now known who he will be replacing on the Major League roster. Breakout starting pitcher Eury Perez is going down to the Minor Leagues. How can this be happening?! Isn't he a National League Rookie of the Year candidate?! It's time to break down this surprising turn of events and see why it happened.

The Miami Marlins demoted starting pitcher Eury Perez to the Minor Leagues.

Eury Perez used to be an elite top prospect for the Miami Marlins. There was a lot of hype for his debut and it proved to be 100% right. There were no exaggerations as Eury exploded onto the scene this season. He has been worth 1.8 WAR for his performance. The performance? A 2.36 ERA/3.72 FIP with 10.3 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9, in 11 games and 53.1 innings pitched. It's hard to imagine better results than these video game like numbers for the young stud starting picher.

There is just one issue with Eury Perez....inning limits! The 20 year old phenom has never topped 77 innings pitched in a season. He's already at 84.1 innings pitched for the season between the Majors and Minors, and there's concern with him going forward. There's no point in risking injury and pushing him to pitch too much. The Fish have to take good care of Eury, and make sure that he can continue pitching well this season and in the seasons going forward.

The Miami Marlins are watching Eury Perez's inning totals and that is why he's being sent down to the Minors. It's certainly not performance oriented, as he's done as good as could've possibly been expected. He's going to keep throwing lightly in the Minors, as he'll be prepared for a return to the big league club for the stretch run. Having his arm in the second half of the season will be crucial for The Fish to make the playoffs.

What do I think of this decision? I support it as long as this keeps Eury Perez healthy and productive going forward.
