The news keep on coming for the Miami Marlins. As we process those, we can also analyze trades that went through. Especially that one really big one... Anyway, with all the players coming and going...here's yet another one. The Fish finally moved on from struggling CF Nick Gordon. Was this the right call? Let's find out....

The Miami Marlins finally moved on from CF Nick Gordon.

Nick Gordon has been surprisingly bad this season. The former top prospect with the Minnesota Twins, has a -1.7 WAR and a .227/.258/.369 batting line, with 8 home runs and 32 RBI in 95 games and 260 AB. I mean it probably couldn't get much worse for the 28 year old than that. It's obviously sad when former top prospects don't work out, but that's the interesting nature of the game. You never know who will actually become a star...or make it on a Major League roster at all.

Peter Bendix was quick to move on from Gordon after that poor production this season, as he's been designated for assignment today. The 28 year old was the fifth pick of the 2014 draft by the Minnesota Twins! Yes, that is the fifth pick in the first round, not a fifth round pick, in case you were wondering. Nick Gordon was even the 33'rd overall prospect on the MLB top 100 at one point!

The supposed SS of the future for Minnesota never lived up to that enormous hype. In his three seasons with the Twins from 2021 to 2023, Gordon batted just .250/.293/.392. He did so in 243 games and 696 AB. A large enough sample size, that there was no real reason to assume that he would finally figure things out. He also hasn't flashed any promising signs to signal those improvements either.

All of that said, there was nothing wrong with Peter Bendix taking a flyer on a former elite prospect. It just didn't work out in the end and we now know that for a fact. I'm sure he's young enough to get another opportunity somewhere, but he'll really have to be a late-bloomer now.
