There are some positive news on formerly struggling Miami Marlins hitters. There's also advanced stats for others showing that they can even get better. In the meantime, with ace Sandy Alcantara out for the season, another player has stepped up to take on the team's leadership role. That player? None other than Jake Burger!
Jake Burger has become a clubhouse leader for the Miami Marlins.
Jake Burger has had a great start to his Miami Marlins career. He batted .303/.355/.505, with 9 home runs and 28 RBI in 53 games and 198 AB last season for The Fish. It was such an impressive debut, that he looked like a legitimate middle of the order bat. It did look like the batting average was probably not sustainable, as he batted .214/.279/.527 for the Chicago White Sox in 88 games and 294 AB earlier that season.
This season, Burger is batting .242/.298/.451, with 25 home runs and 60 RBI in 119 games and 459 AB 9as of Tuesday). He's a middle of the order bat and a legit threat for home runs at any point. The downside is of course that he's very streaky, and neither the batting average or the OBP are particularly impressive at this point.
Burger is a leader who does it by showing an example. He doesn't tell others what to do, but instead shows what should be done. Burger is already thinking about next season and is focused on building something good. He also said:
''Don't take anything for granted. That's the biggest thing. You look at bona fide leaders around the league, and they just look like they’re having fun and going out there and playing the game hard. That's what I strive to be on a daily basis: not take a day for granted and know even if I’m 0-for-4, if I move a guy over for a sac fly situation, you’re helping the team. Just doing little things like that make the difference in the clubhouse.”
Jake Burger has been a great addition to the Miami Marlins, and his leadership is an added bonus.
