Miami Marlins have some surprising division dominance since 1993
The Miami Marlins are getting ready for the 2025 season. We don't know how it will go, but we'll have our ace back at least. The farm system will hopefully continue to improve as well. I thought that it would be fun to take a look at something, that many people may not even be aware of! Did you know just how successful The Fish have been compared to the rest of the NL East since 1993?!
The Miami Marlins have done better than most of the division since 1993.
The Miami Marlins weren't blessed with great ownership. The jury is still out on Bruce Sherman, but the likes of Jeffrey Loria certainly didn't leave a good taste in everyone's mouths. The Florida Marlins began play in 1993, debuting in the NL East. The team of course changed its name to the Miami Marlins in 2012.
The Fish have never won the division and have mostly had losing records. That said, what's the most important thing? Is it winning the World Series? Is it worth a decade of losing after? Is it being a consistently winning team that makes a deep playoff run? I don't think it's a surprise to say there's no trophies for having a contending season, there's no flags. You don't see teams having flags saying: "2004: made it to the NLCS". The only flags that hang and matter are for World Series wins. That's the benchmark of success in the Major Leagues.
So how did the Miami Marlins' NL East rivals do since 1993? The Fish won the World Series twice, in 1997 and 2003. How many World Series did the New York Mets win? 0. That's right 0. The Mets actually did win two overall, but those were back in 1969 and 1986. In fact, The Fish have been the more successful franchise winning just as many World Series, while being an active franchise for a significantly lesser time.
The Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals won one each (2008 for the former and 2019 for the latter). The Atlanta Braves are really the only team that did as good as the Miami Marlins, despite winning more division titles and pennants, they ultimately won the same number of World Series since 1993: 2. They won those in 1995 and 2021. Flags matter most and no one in the NL East has more than the Miami Marlins since 1993.
