Miami Marlins closer Tanner Scott is the best closer in the Major Leagues. It's not just my opinion, it's actually a fact proven by WAR! As The Fish are trying to make the playoffs, and trying to figure out the best bullpen mix, the best closer in the game has quietly been established. Tanner has some serious competition of course....Milwaukee's Josh Hader, Cincinnati's Alexis Diaz, Pittsburgh's David Bednar, Atlanta's Raisel Iglesias, Houston's Ryan Pressly and others.
Miami Marlins closer Tanner Scott is the best closer in the Majors.
Tanner Scott has a sparkling 2.24 ERA with an even better 2.18 FIP. He also has an elite 12.1 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9, in 65 games and 68.1 innings pitched. He has a 3.0 WAR. That's the highest WAR among all closers. Are you as surprised as I was when I saw that?
Curious how others are doing? Josh Hader has a better ERA (1.29), but a worse FIP (2.44 FIP), with a better strikeout rate (14.4 K/9), but a terrible BB/9 ( 5.2 BB/9). He also has a worse 2.1 WAR. How about Cincinnati's Alexis Diaz? He's losing in WAR with 2.5, FIP (3.34), K/9 (11.7) and BB/9 (4.3). There's no doubt that Scott is better. How about Pittsburgh's David Bednar? He's losing in WAR (2.4), FIP (2.38) and K/9 (10.2).
Not convinced yet? Raisel Iglesias is losing in WAR (1.0), ERA (3.14), FIP (3.06) and K/9 (11.1). No contest again. Houston's Ryan Pressly? Heavily losing in WAR (0.6), ERA (3.20), FIP (3.14) and K/9 (10.2). It's honestly mazing how Tanner Scott has been better than every single good closer in the Majors this season.
Who else is even left that's considered an elite closer? The Milwaukee Brewers' Devin Williams? He's losing in WAR (2.2), FIP (2.71) and BB/9 (4.1). The Boston Red Sox' Kenley Jansen? He's losing in WAR (1.1), ERA (3.43), FIP (3.60) and K/9 (10.5). I can go on and on. Miami Marlins closer Tanner Scott has overcome his career-long control issues to become the best closer in the game. Let's hope that he continues to be this way.
