Miami Marlins: important roster moves
Did you follow the MLB Draft and see who the Miami Marlins picked? Did you see our breakdown? With the draft and the upcoming trade deadline getting all of the attention, it's easy to overlook other moves. The Fish made some roster moves and then some more. There's a lot to unpack here. Are you ready?
The Miami Marlins made some roster moves.
Let's start with right-handed relief pitcher Jeff Lindgren. Lindgren was recently waived and then unclaimed. He's now been optioned back down to AAA Jacksonville. It shouldn't be a surprise, considering he produced a lackluster 5.14 ERA/4.71 FIP, with 1.3 K/9 and 5.1 BB/9 in 3 games and 7.0 innings pitched. It's unclear if he'll be back this season.
Sean Reynolds is going back down to the Minor Leagues as well. The two-way capable player did not play in any games during his call-up. Johnny Cueto is coming back. Hold your excitement back (I'm being sarcastic), the horrible signing produced a terrifying 36.00 ERA/32.38 FIP, with 0.0 K/9 and 9.00 BB/9 in a game and an inning pitched. He wasn't much better during his rehab in the Minors. In 26 1/3 innings pitched there, he produced a 9.11 ERA.
Luckily for us, Cueto is no longer a part of the Miami Marlins rotation. He's going to be used strictly out of the bullpen going forward. A spot start probably can't be ruled out, but it's hopefully not happening any time soon. He actually has a $10.5 million club option for next season, but it will surely be bought out for $2.5 million. I just hope that he won't blow any games when he comes in to pitch. The best case scenario is that he somehow turns into a good reliever, though I'm not holding out hope for that.
OF Jonathan Davis is getting moved to the 60-day IL from the 15-day one. Davis hit .244/.307/.378 in 34 games and 90 AB for the Miami Marlins this season. Unfortunately, he's done for the season and it's unknown if he'll ever suit up for The Fish in the future. Let's wish him a full recovery.
